ESO Important Tank Gear

As a Tank in The Elder Scrolls Online you will generally be required to gather a range of different gear sets. The most important and useful sets are those that provide some benefits to a group. Here you will find a list of all of the most common, useful and required gear that you will need for all sorts of content when Tanking in ESO.

Claw of Yolnahkriin

Set bonus

2 items: Adds 1206 Maximum Health

3 items: Gain Minor Aegis at all times, reducing your damage taken from Dungeon, Trial, and Arena Monsters by 5%.

4 items: Adds 1096 Maximum Stamina

5 items: When you taunt an enemy, you give yourself and 11 group members Minor Courage for 15 seconds, increasing your Weapon Damage and Spell Damage by 215. This effect can occur once every 8 seconds.

5 items (Perfected): Adds 1206 Maximum Health

When to use:
Needed as the Main Tank for most Trials, Dungeons and Arenas.

Where to obtain:
Sunspire Trial (None Perfected), Veteran Sunspire Trial (Perfected).

Which pieces are used:
All pieces.

Comments:
This is a Tank set that is actually well designed for both Tanking and Group Buffing. It’s really the only useful Heavy Armor set that exists for group content.

The group buff Minor Courage provides around a 3% group DPS increase to all group members and is applied by taunting an enemy so its very easy to activate and easy to maintain. The other set bonuses are nice Tanking bonuses with 2x Max Health, Max Stamina and Minor Aegis.

The none perfected set is still good to use if you can’t get it in perfected as the only difference is the loss of 1 Max Health bonus so it’s still worth having because the set is so simple to use and provides a nice buff.

Drake’s Rush

Set bonus

5 items: When you Bash an enemy, you and up to 3 group members within 15 metres of you gain Major Heroism for 12 seconds, granting you 3 Ultimate every 1.5 seconds. This effect can occur once every 18 seconds.

When to use:
Any situations where you want a Heavy Armor set that provides a small damage buff.

Which pieces are used:

Comments:
This set will provide around a 1.5% DPS increase to a group if it is applied to Damage Dealers when used. It’s was nerfed while on the PTS so it’s not as useful as it was originally but could still be used if you are looking for a Heavy Armor buff set for your Off Tank. There are so few sets to use as a Tank, especially heavy sets and the fact this provides a group buff and a slight DPS increase means it’s going to have some use.

This set has a lower Ultimate per second gain compared to Arkasis, however the Arkasis proc can be wasted so this set provides much more reliability.

Aegis of Galenwe

Set bonus

3 items: Gain Minor Aegis at all times, reducing your damage taken from Dungeon, Trial, and Arena Monsters by 5%.

4 items: Adds 4% Healing Taken

5 items: After successfully blocking, you grant Empower to 11 allies within 15 meters for 3 seconds, increasing the damage of their next Light and Heavy Attacks by 40%. This effect can occur once every 2 seconds.

Should be used in place of Alkosh when Alkosh is not needed or used and you have no Necromancer support using Empowered Grasp.

Cloudrest Trial (None Perfected), Veteran Cloudrest Trial (Perfected) Standard Cloudrest for Weapons, +1 for Body Pieces, +2 for Purple Jewellery, +3 for Gold Jewellery

Which pieces are used:
All pieces.

Comments:
This is a great set for new Tanks and for groups who do not need Alkosh or have any Necro supports in the group. This set procs automatically just from blocking attack which makes it a very good option to replace Alkosh and still provide a DPS boost for your group. This is more consistent than using a Necromancer with Empowered Grasp as it will apply to everyone in range and doesn’t need to be aimed.

Early testing showed Damage Dealers gaining over an 8% increased DPS from Galenwe.

Elemental Catalyst

Set bonus

5 items: Whenever you deal Flame, Shock, or Frost Damage, you apply a stack of Flame, Shock, or Frost Weakness to the enemy for 3 seconds. Each stack of an Elemental Weakness increases their Critical Damage taken by 3%. An enemy can only have one stack of each Elemental Weakness at a time.

Roar of Alkosh

3 items: Gain Minor Slayer at all times, increasing your damage done to Dungeon, Trial, and Arena Monsters by 5%.

4 items: Adds 129 Weapon Damage

5 items: When you activate a synergy, you send a shockwave from your position that deals 3010 Physical damage and an additional 11020 Physical damage over 10 seconds. Reduces the Physical and Spell Resistance of any enemy hit by the amount of your Weapon Damage for the duration, up to a maximum of 3000.

When to use:
This set is not needed in Magicka groups. Still a useful set for Add pulls and good for a Stamina groups.

Where to obtain:
Maw of Lorkhaj Trial.

Which pieces are used:
Jewellery, 1 Handed Weapons, Shield, Ice Staff, Lightning Staff. If you are struggling to get the weapons, try using Hands/Waist with a 2x Heavy Monster Set.

Comments:
Alkosh is no longer needed on Boss fights in Magicka groups from the Flames of Ambition DLC. Due to the CP and Armor changes, it would not do anything for a Magicka group.

In Stamina groups it’s still vital to help the damage dealers reach the penetration cap and should still be used.

Ebon Armory

When to use:
This is used mostly by the Off Tank to increase the groups Health and survivability. Used when there are no other beneficial sets for a group. Sometimes used by the Main Tank as a replacement for Alkosh if that is not suitable for your particular group.

Where to obtain:
Crypt of Hearts I & II.

Which pieces are used:
All pieces.

Comments:
This set gives the group a 1000 Max Health buff. Its a good first Tanking set to farm since it comes from an easy dungeon and it provides the person using it with a good boost to Health along with the group buff, and it’s almost a less selfish version of Plague Doctor. You would drop this set as a Trials Main Tank as soon as you can obtain Yolnahkriin. You would mostly use this set as a Off Tank, it’s a valuable set for pretty much most groups in the game as it adds an extra safety cushion with increasing the whole groups Health and for most situations there is no better Heavy Armor options for an Off Tank to use.

Arkasis’s Genius

5 items: Whenever you drink a potion while in combat, you and 3 group members gain 44 Ultimate. This effect can occur once every 30 seconds

Potentially used in situations where you want to provide a group buff but you are out of group.

Which pieces are used:
Any pieces.

Comments:
This set has a large range on it, similar to that of aura sets like Worm and Ebon. Since Ebon is generally not as useful anymore this could be the immediate replacement until something better comes along. This set works especially well for situations in trials where you have a Tank out of group for whatever reason. They can use this set to still provide some level of group buff as it will proc on the wearer plus 3 other people, so it is providing some group support. 

This set provides a better Ultimate per second compared to Drakes Rush, however this is a burst Ultimate gain which can sometimes be a disadvantage since it means you could go over your Ult amount and waste the set proc.

Powerful Assault

5 items: When you cast an Assault ability, you and up to 5 group members within 10 meters gain 307 Weapon Damage and Spell Damage for 10 seconds.

When to use:
Useful for Trials mostly by the Off Tank.

Where to obtain:
Imperial City Tel Va Merchant.

Which pieces are used:
Jewellery, Staff, Body Pieces. Bow can also be used.

Comments:
This set gives an good group buff. The problem is maintaining the buff as it has a very small radius of 10m and is rather sustain heavy. This set no longer activates on people based on their Max Stamina as it did in the past. The buff appears to proc on people randomly however it is somewhat proximity based. To make the buff appear on multiple targets you cannot stand still, if you stand still the buff will refresh on the same people so you always need to be moving to get it onto other people. You effectively need to try and have 2 stacks of people and you would move side to side, out-ranging 1 stack at a time to proc the buff on alternative people. In 4-Man content if you are comfortable Tanking in Medium Armor you could replace Yolnahkriin since the buff is bigger and it procs on you +5 others it should always hit your whole group. This set only needs to be used on 1 bar, so you use the Staff and an Assault ability on your back bar and then you can use a 2 piece weapon set on the front bar such as the Master Weapons. 

It is not advised to use Powerful Assault on the body pieces in trials as an Off Tank unless you are a Tank with vast experience and awareness and your group is a higher tier advanced group. This is a terrible idea for progression groups.

Dragon’s Defilement

5 items: Adds 1206 Maximum Health, When you take damage from a melee attack, gain a corrupting aura for 5 seconds that applies Minor Breach to all enemies near you, lowering their Physical Resistance and Spell Resistance by 2974. This effect can occur every 5 seconds.

Can be used in add pulls by the Main or Off Tank. Good for adds pulls in any situation.

Lair of Maarselok.

Which pieces to obtain:
Any pieces can be used, typically it is paired with Alkosh for large debuffing, in this situation you would use the body pieces.

Comments:
For add pulls this is a great set as it applies Minor Breech’s everything within the Aura it creates when you take damage from a melee attack. A healer can find it difficult to target multiple adds with Power of the Light to give the same debuff but this set can do it easily. The other set bonuses are good for Tanks also with a Max Health and 2x Max Stamina since add waves generally use more Stamina as you have to block multiple targets. You have to make sure that you are the Tank taking the melee adds and stacking with all the other adds so that the aura debuffs everything.

Frozen Watcher

5 items: Summon a blizzard around you while blocking, inflicting 1365 Frost Damage every 1 second to enemies within 6 meters. Your blizzard has a 15% chance of inflicting Chilled on enemies damaged.

Comments:
This set is an Area of Effect debuff set. When you hold block a blizzard surrounds your character. You MUST be on an Ice Staff bar to make this set worth using. This will very reliably cause the Chilled effect on all enemies stood inside the AoE it creates. When the enemy becomes chilled, so long as you are wielding an Ice Staff also, you will cause AoE Minor Brittle which increases the amount of Crit Damage they take by 10% but it also applies Minor Maim reducing the enemy damage done by 5%. If you are looking for ways to debuff enemies to kill them faster, this is a great set to use.

The Worm’s Raiment

When to use:
Mainly an Off Tank set for Magicka group compositions to help with sustain. Can be used in almost all trials where it’s a Magicka group. Main Tanks in progression teams could use this in place of Alkosh or when range Tanking.

Where to obtain:
Vaults of Madness. Named Ring & Neck from Ancient One boss. Named 1 Handed Weapon from Mad Architect boss. Shield for completing the dungeon quest.

Which pieces to obtain:
Jewellery, 1 Handed Weapon, Shield, Lightning Staff, Frost Staff, Bow.

Comments:
When you are in a group with a Magicka composition then this set is good for helping the Damage Dealers to sustain. It’s also not a terrible Tank set as we use mostly Magicka abilities on all Classes of Tank so the Magicka Recovery and Max Magicka are all helpful to the Tanks too. This is a good set to collect early on and combining with Ebon for a simple and easy Off Tank setup.

War Machine

5 items: When you use an Ultimate ability, you and the closest 5 group members within 28 meters of you gain Major Slayer for 1 second per 10 Ultimate spent, increasing your damage done to Dungeon, Trial, and Arena Monsters by 10%.

When to use:
Any situation where Alkosh is not needed, and your group is not using Roaring Opportunist.

Halls of Fabrications Trial.

Which pieces are used:
Weapons & Jewellery. Medium Set, body pieces can be used if experienced and able to Tank in Medium Armor.

Comments:
This is quite a good set to use when your group is not using Alkosh or Roaring Opportunist. It activates upon using your Ultimate which would be Aggressive Horn and will buff the nearest 5 people. The reason this is such a good set is because it requires minimal effort to activate and there is no additional effort required other than using your Ultimate. To increase the value of using this set you can combine it with Bloodspawn or the Mythic item Pearls of Ehlnofey.

Bani’s Torment

4 items: Adds 1096 Maximum Stamina

5 items: When you taunt a nearby enemy, you tether to them for 15 seconds. While tethered, you apply Major Maim to your enemy, reducing their damage done by 10%, and you gain Major Vitality, increasing your healing received by 16%. The tether is broken if the enemy moves 8 meters away from you. This effect can occur once every 15 seconds.

When to use:
Kynes Aegis, any situation where the Main Tank takes a lot of damage. If you are learning to Tank in progression trials.

Which pieces are used:
Any

Comments:
This is a set that could be used by Main Tanks in any situation where the incoming damage is very high and you want to reduce the incoming damage and boost your self healing. It would be mostly suited to newer Tanks who are learning new environments and it would work well in Kynes Aegis especially Last Boss Hardmode. The uptime on this can be 100% as it has a 15 second uptime and its possible to refresh every 15 seconds so you can keep reapplying both Major Maim to an enemy and Major Vitality to yourself every time you refresh your taunt. Due to the high uptime it is a great replacement for Alkosh and very much suited towards Tanks who are in progression level groups or doing content with random groups.

The Morag Tong

Set bonus

5 items: When you deal direct damage, you cause the enemy to take 10% more damage from Poison and Disease attacks for 5 seconds.

Can be used as the Main Tank, Off Tank or a Tank/DD Hybrid depending on the situation.

Jewellery, 1 Handed Weapon, Shield, Lightning Staff.

Comments:
This is a pretty good damage increase for a Stamina group composition. It can increase DPS by around 3% but the DDs need to be setup to make use of the increased Poison and Disease Damage. If you are using this set as a Off Tanking DD then its pretty good with the 2x Weapons Damage bonuses but in terms of a proper Tanking set it offers nothing other than Max Stamina and is purely a group buffing set.

Torug’s Pact

5 items: Decreases weapon enchantment cooldown by 33% and increases non Oblivion Damage weapon enchantment potency by 45%.

When to use:
Can be used in place of Alkosh for a more reliable uptime in situations where you need Alkosh.

Where to obtain:
Crafted Set.

Which pieces are used:
Any pieces.

Comments:
You can use this set with an Infused Crusher to increase its potency, providing an additional 957 penetration. You would only use this in situations where your group still needs Alkosh, but you use Torugs due to it being more reliable. Alkosh requires synergies to be supplied and needs the Tank to time their use every 9 seconds and hope that the synergies are not used by other members of the group. To maintain Torugs Infused/Crusher the Tank just needs to recast Elemental Blockade every 14 seconds which is much more reliable.

Hircine’s Veneer

5 items: Grants 145 Stamina Recovery to you and up to 11 other group members within 28 meters of you.

When to use:
Mainly an Off Tank set for Stamina group compositions to help with sustain. Can be used in almost all trials where it’s a Stamina group.

Where to obtain:
Selenes Web. Named Bow from Longclaw boss. Named Neck from Queen Aklauah boss.

Which pieces to obtain:
Jewellery, 1 Handed Weapon, Shield, Lightning Staff, Bow. You could also pick up all Divines body pieces for situations where you don’t have much Tanking to do and can do a little damage.

Comments:
When you are in a group with a Stamina composition then this set is good for helping the Damage Dealers to sustain. The set isn’t as good as Worm from a Tanking perspective, we get Max Stamina and Stamina Recovery which is nice for the group but completely useless in any situation where you need to be blocking as you wont be gaining anything from them so it really is a full on support set.

Vestment of Olorime

Set bonus

2 items: Adds 129 Magicka Recovery

3 items: Gain Minor Aegis at all times, reducing your damage taken from Dungeon, Trial, and Arena Monsters by 5%.

4 items: Adds 129 Magicka Recovery

5 items: Casting abilities that leave an effect on the ground in combat will create a circle of might for 5 seconds. You and your group members in the circle gain Major Courage for 20 seconds, increasing your Weapon Damage and Spell Damage by 430 for 20 seconds. This effect can occur once every 10 seconds.

5 items (Perfected) : Adds 1096 Maximum Magicka.

When to use:
This can be used when doing 4-man content without a healer. Dungeon Tank Builds

Where to obtain:
Cloudrest Trial.

Which pieces to obtain:
Weapons and Jewellery.

Comments:
When doing 4-Man content this set provides a buff to help increase your groups damage. You would usually use this if you don’t have a Healer or the Healer is using something different and you try to position it so that it is on top of the DDs if they are inexperienced or you place it somewhere accessible for DDs who know to pick it up. This is a Light Armor set so you would use Jewellery/Weapons/Belt to achieve a 5 piece. You do not want to run this set on 2 bars as its a waste. You would only use this on the back bar with your Staff/Bow as you can only place this buff on the ground by casting a ground AoE ability such as Endless Hail, Elemental Blockade or even Blood Altar. You could combine this set with Powerful Assault or Yolnahkriin and then you could use any front bar 1H & Shield combination such as vMA, Asylum or Masters.
