The Backbone of Every ESO Trial Off Tank
Off Tanking in ESO trials is fundamentally different from both dungeon tanking and the Main Tank role. In 12-player trials, the Off Tank supports the Main Tank by controlling secondary targets, managing add waves, and covering essential group buffs and debuffs that would otherwise go unchecked.
While the Main Tank handles primary boss positioning and the most punishing mechanics, the Off Tank absorbs the chaos around it, stacking smaller enemies, reacting to split phases, and stepping in as a secondary Main Tank when encounters require multiple bosses to be controlled simultaneously.
With subclassing, the Off Tank role has become even more flexible. Rather than being limited to basic add control, you can now stack powerful utility passives, improve sustain, and bring additional debuffs or group buffs depending on what your team already covers. This allows the Off Tank to fill gaps in composition, whether that means running Major Vulnerability, increasing group survivability, or even providing partial support through healing or damage during lower-pressure phases.
There is no single “best” ESO Trial Off Tank Build. Effective Off Tanks adapt their gear, subclass choices, and skill bars around the Main Tank and the needs of the group. Your job is not to compete for responsibility, it is to stabilise the group and ensure everything the Main Tank cannot cover is handled efficiently.
This guide provides a flexible ESO Trial Off Tank Build framework that works across all classes. It prioritises add control, utility coverage, and adaptability, giving you a strong foundation that can adjust to any trial environment without rebuilding your character from scratch.
Playing the Main Tank role instead?
This guide focuses on ESO Trial Off Tanking. If you’re responsible for primary boss positioning, handling the majority of heavy mechanics, and anchoring the group, use the dedicated Main Tank build instead.
Off Tank Responsibilities in ESO Trials
In 12-player ESO trials, the Off Tank supports the Main Tank while controlling secondary threats, managing add waves, and covering mechanics or utility that the group would otherwise struggle to handle.
Key Responsibilities
- Survivability & Sustain: Maintain strong health, mitigation, and reliable resource management. Even when not holding the primary boss, Off Tanks must withstand sustained pressure from add waves, secondary targets, and trial mechanics.
- Add Control & Stacking: Chain, stack, and position secondary enemies efficiently to maximise AoE damage and reduce pressure on healers and damage dealers.
- Secondary Boss Tanking: Handle additional bosses or priority targets during split phases and multi-boss encounters, effectively acting as a second Main Tank when required.
- Mechanic Handling: Perform trial-specific mechanics assigned to the Off Tank position. This can include isolating dangerous enemies, interrupting priority targets, soaking mechanics, or temporarily separating threats from the group.
- Supporting Add Pulls: Assist the Main Tank during large pulls by helping stack enemies together quickly and safely.
- Debuff & Buff Coverage: Apply additional debuffs or provide group buffs that are not covered elsewhere in the composition. The Off Tank often adjusts gear and skills around what the Main Tank and group already provide.
- Chaos Management: Stabilise high-density or unpredictable phases of encounters, keeping secondary threats controlled so the group can focus on primary objectives.
Core Essentials for an ESO Main Tank
Attributes
- 64 Health
Mundus Stone
The Atronach Mundus Stone is the most reliable choice for ESO trial tanking due to its Magicka Recovery. Maintaining uptime on taunts, buffs, debuffs, and utility skills is one of the biggest challenges for Main Tanks, especially in longer encounters. Increased Magicka Recovery allows you to cast consistently without over-relying on heavy attacks or external sustain.
However, The Steed can be situationally valuable in specific trials such as Asylum Sanctorium and Cloudrest. The additional movement speed and health recovery can improve positioning flexibility and survivability during highly mobile encounters where the Off Tank is required to relocate frequently or manage mechanics.
Food Choices
Red Frothgar remains a strong all-round option, offering high Max Health alongside Magicka Recovery. This supports survivability while maintaining reliable skill uptime in demanding encounters.
Smoked Bear Haunch, or the cheaper alternative Jewels of Misrule, becomes slightly more attractive in the Off Tank role. These foods trade some Max Health and Magicka Recovery (compared to Red Frothgar) for additional Health and Stamina Recovery. Because Off Tanks often have more opportunities to drop block and may provide stamina-based buffs or utility, the additional Stamina Recovery can be valuable in many trials.
Bewitched Sugar Skulls can be used situationally when larger Max Resource pools are needed, but it is generally less efficient than recovery-focused food for sustained trial tanking.
Potions
Essence of Health (Tri-Stat) potions are the standard choice for ESO trial tanking. They give additional recovery and restore all three resources, providing consistent sustain across long encounters, making them reliable for every class.
Minor Heroism potions are a strong alternative for experienced tanks in organised groups, offering increased Ultimate generation to support more frequent defensive or group-focused Ultimates.
Race Selection
Nord is still one of the strongest overall race choices for ESO trial tanking due to its bonus resistances, Max Stamina, and increased Ultimate generation. These benefits directly support survivability and Ultimate uptime.
However, the Off Tank role allows slightly more flexibility. Other races with strong sustain or utility passives can perform effectively.
Attributes
Placing all 64 attribute points into Health remains the most consistent approach for veteran and hardmode trials. Higher Max Health improves survivability, damage shield scaling, and burst healing effectiveness.
In older or more forgiving trials, Off Tanks may experiment slightly more with resource distribution, but Health-focused allocation remains the safest and most stable option.
Stats to Aim For (Fully Buffed)
~40,000 Health
Provides a strong survivability baseline for Veteran, DLC, and Hardmode trials. While some older encounters allow more flexibility, newer content often demands higher survivability.
~20,000 Stamina
Stamina is required for blocking, dodging, breaking free, and movement. Around 20k is a comfortable baseline. Off Tanks may occasionally function with slightly lower values depending on encounter demands, but sufficient Stamina is critical during heavy add phases or split mechanics.
Stamina should generally be higher than Magicka so resource-restoring synergies prioritise Stamina.
~15,000 Magicka
Most tank skills cost Magicka, and sustained casting relies on Magicka Recovery rather than stacking Max Magicka. Around 15k is sufficient for stable performance.
25k–33k Resistances
Resistances reduce all incoming damage. While the cap is 33,100, being capped at all times is not required. Older trials are more forgiving, but newer content applies heavy DoTs where high resistances become far more important.
Resistances matter most when taking unblocked damage or damage-over-time, as block mitigation does not reduce damage-over-time effects.
~2,000 Magicka Recovery
Around 2,000 Magicka Recovery allows consistent uptime on buffs, debuffs, and utility skills. Falling below this value noticeably impacts performance. Higher Magicka Recovery can also indirectly support Stamina sustain through skills that convert Magicka usage into Stamina returns.
Off Tank Gear Setup for ESO Trials
The Off Tank gear setup in ESO trials is built around flexibility and group optimisation. Unlike the Main Tank, who typically anchors sustained boss debuffs, the Off Tank has more freedom to run utility-focused sets that enhance group damage, increase Ultimate generation, or stabilise progression runs.
Your gear choices should reflect what the Main Tank, healers and damage dealers already provide. In organised groups, this often means covering Major Vulnerability, increasing Ultimate uptime, or supplying additional Weapon and Spell Damage buffs to maximise overall group performance.
This baseline setup focuses on group amplification first, while maintaining enough survivability to handle add waves, secondary bosses, and high-pressure mechanics.

Gear Breakdown
Monster Set — Baron Zaudrus
Baron Zaudrus provides extremely strong Ultimate generation when combined with Off Tank passives and skills. Activated by simply casting Elemental Susceptibility, this allows near-constant Ultimate usage, which is especially valuable in groups relying on frequent Major Force, Charged Atronach, or Colossus rotations.
In organised trial environments, the ability to generate Ultimates consistently can significantly increase overall group damage.
Monster Set — Archdruid Devyric
Archdruid Devyric offers Major Vulnerability, making it a strong option when the group lacks consistent Colossus uptime. The Off Tank is often well-positioned to apply this debuff during add waves or boss phases.
It requires a fully charged Heavy Attack to activate, which can be situationally risky, but when executed reliably it provides strong group damage amplification.
5-Piece Set — Pearlescent Ward
Pearlescent Ward provides a unique Weapon and Spell Damage buff to the group while also acting as a progression stabiliser. As group members fall, surviving players gain increasing damage reduction, helping prevent full wipes during recovery phases.
This makes it one of the strongest Off Tank sets for both damage amplification and run-saving survivability, particularly in progression or hardmode trials.
5-Piece Set — Powerful Assault
Powerful Assault provides another unique Weapon and Spell Damage group buff. However, it has limited range and requires consistent micromanagement to maintain uptime.
Off Tanks running Powerful Assault must reposition into the group regularly to refresh the buff, making it more demanding but highly rewarding in coordinated trial groups.
Gear Setup Details
Gear Weights
- 5 Heavy / 1 Medium / 1 Light
Running 5 Heavy is the most common setup for trial tanking, as the Off Tank still needs to withstand sustained pressure from adds, secondary bosses, and mechanic-heavy phases. Adding 1 Medium and 1 Light provides Undaunted passives and additional sustain, offering strong overall coverage for survivability and resource management in Veteran and Hardmode content. However, the Off Tank role allows more flexibility than the Main Tank. In trials where you are not required to act as a full secondary tank for extended periods, alternative weight distributions can be viable provided you maintain at least three pieces of Heavy for baseline mitigation.
Armor Traits
- Divines – Default choice when sustain is the priority, improving Mundus effectiveness (most commonly Magicka Recovery).
- Sturdy – Useful in encounters with heavy, sustained blocking. Reduces block cost and improves long-term sustain.
- Reinforced – Situational option for difficult Veteran and Hardmodes when reaching resistance cap is an issue.
Divines will be the correct choice in most scenarios, with Sturdy and Reinforced used as situational swaps.
Jewellery
- Harmony + Prismatic Cost Reduction – Harmony quickly outperforms other traits when synergies are frequent. Prismatic Cost Reduction can be particularly useful for Off Tanks, as it reduces the cost of all skills — especially valuable when running stamina-based buffs or utility.
- Magicka Recovery – Strong alternative, especially if you rely primarily only Magicka-based abilities. Recovery enchants outperform cost reduction for overall consistency.
- Infused – Strong alternative when synergy uptime is low. Performs better than Harmony if synergies are infrequent.
- Swift – Very valuable for add pulls and repositioning, especially when using gear-swap addons in trials.
Weapons
One-Hand & Shield
- Decisive + Hardening – Strong all-round option, increasing Ultimate generation while providing extra shielding.
- Infused + Weakening – Ideal when running without a dedicated healer, reducing enemy damage output.
- Absorb Stamina Enchant – Provides minor Stamina sustain when needed.
Ice Staff
- Charged – Best for add pulls, allowing reliable application of Chilled when using skills like Pulsar.
- Infused + Crusher – Mandatory for bosses to maintain maximum Crusher uptime and improve group DPS.
Situational Gear Swaps
Monster Set Alternative — Spaulder of Ruin
Spaulder of Ruin provides a unique Weapon and Spell Damage buff to up to six group members at the cost of reducing your recovery. In organised trial environments where you can remain positioned within the group and comfortably manage sustain, this becomes a strong buff-focused option.
5-Piece Alternatives — War Machine
War Machine provides Major Slayer to five group members, with the duration scaling based on the amount of Ultimate spent. This makes it extremely effective when paired with high Ultimate generation setups.
5-Piece Alternatives — Saxhleel Champion, Lucent Echoes & Crimson Oath’s Rive
These sets are more commonly associated with Main Tank setups but can transition into Off Tank options depending on group composition.
- Saxhleel Champion allows you to provide Major Force without relying on Warhorn, enabling the use of alternative Ultimates while maintaining group damage output.
- Lucent Echoes increases group Critical Damage and Critical Healing. While its personal damage reduction effect is often more valuable for a Main Tank, it remains a viable Off Tank option if not already covered.
- Crimson Oath’s Rive reduces enemy resistances and increases group DPS when penetration is lacking. Although less commonly required in modern trial compositions, it becomes valuable if the group is under the penetration cap and the Main Tank is not providing it.
Subclassing for ESO Trial Off Tanks
Subclassing for Off Tanks is built around one core principle: maximise Ultimate generation and group utility while maintaining enough durability to control secondary enemies and split mechanics.
Unlike the Main Tank, the Off Tank has greater flexibility to stack Ultimate-focused passives and buff-oriented skill lines. The goal is to act as a utility engine for the group, ensuring consistent Ultimate uptime and filling any gaps in composition.
The primary Off Tank subclassing framework centres around the following:
- Sorcerer – Daedric Summoning: Forms the defensive backbone of this setup. The passives increase Max resources and survivability, Regenerative Ward adds useful group sustain, and the Charged Atronach Ultimate provides a Major Berserk synergy for strong group damage amplification.
- Necromancer – Bone Tyrant: A strong Off Tank line for survivability and Ultimate generation. Bone Tyrant provides defensive tools and excellent ultigen potential, allowing you to cast more group-impacting Ultimates consistently (such as Charged Atronach, Barrier, or encounter-specific options).
- Nightblade – Siphoning: Adds additional sustain, increased Max resources, and multiple sources of Ultimate generation, reinforcing the Off Tank’s role as an Ultimate-focused support player.
Optional Adjustments
- Templar – Restoring Light: Adds group utility through healing support, cleanse synergy, and additional support tools, useful when the group is light on sustain or cleansing.
- Necromancer – Grave Lord: Taken specifically for the Colossus Ultimate (Major Vulnerability) when the group needs an additional source. This line is a utility pick rather than a defensive one, and is typically used only when Colossus coverage is lacking.
- Arcanist – Soldier of Apocrypha: Can replace a utility line when extra tankiness is required. Provides strong resistances, sustain tools, and Crux-based value, but is not mandatory unless survivability becomes the priority.
- Dragonknight / Warden: Situational inclusions depending on group needs. These lines are often covered by the Main Tank but can be slotted if specific buffs, debuffs, or defensive tools are required.
When adjusting subclassing, the Off Tank should prioritise filling what the group lacks rather than duplicating coverage already provided.
ESO Trial Off Tank Skill Setup
Off Tank skill bars in ESO trials are built around flexibility and control. While survivability remains essential, the role places greater emphasis on add management, secondary target control, debuff uptime, and Ultimate generation.
Your primary responsibility is to ensure secondary enemies are controlled efficiently while providing any additional buffs or debuffs not already covered by the Main Tank or support roles. In many encounters, this means prioritising chain tools, vulnerability application, and group amplification skills alongside your core defensive setup.
With subclassing and scribing reducing bar pressure, Off Tanks now have more room to optimise around Ultimate rotations, utility coverage, and encounter-specific mechanics without sacrificing durability.
Off Tank Skill Information
- Goading Throw – Ranged taunt that heals on use and applies Major Maim, reducing enemy damage dealt.
- Necrotic Potency – Consumes nearby corpses to generate Ultimate and applies a heal over time per corpse. While slotted, it also reduces damage taken. Extremely strong during add-heavy encounters.
- Regenerative Ward – Provides a damage shield and minor heal while granting Minor Intellect and Minor Endurance to nearby allies, improving group sustain.
- Siphoning Attacks – Converts Health into Magicka and Stamina when activated. While slotted, damage dealt restores Magicka and Stamina once per second, generates Ultimate via passives, and increases Max Magicka and Stamina by 6%.
- Trample – Grants Major Heroism, significantly increasing Ultimate generation. Additional damage effects contribute to status application and overall debuff coverage.
- Replenishing Barrier – Large group and self damage shield that restores Magicka. Triggers Major Force when paired with Saxhleel Champion and grants 10% increased Magicka Recovery through Magicka Aid.

- Pulsar – Applies AoE Minor Mangle and, with a Charged Ice Staff, guarantees Chilled application for Minor Maim, Minor Brittle, Minor Breach (with Blockade), and Minor Protection.
- Razor Caltrops – Applies AoE Major Breach and snares enemies. Also commonly used to proc Powerful Assault.
Key Scribed Skills for ESO Trial Off Tanks
Scribing allows Off Tanks to combine add control, group utility, and Ultimate generation into fewer skill slots. While core tools such as pulls and taunts remain essential, the Off Tank role benefits more heavily from skills that increase group damage or accelerate Ultimate rotations.
These scribed abilities support debuff uptime, buff coverage, and high-frequency Ultimate usage, all of which define strong Off Tank performance in organised trials.
- Wield Soul
- Pull
- Druid’s Resurgence
- Cowardice
A highly efficient multi-purpose skill. Primarily used to chain in smaller adds while applying a taunt, it also functions as a strong sustain tool by restoring both Magicka and Stamina when cast. When used on bosses, it applies Major Cowardice, reducing enemy damage output.
- Shield Throw
- Taunt
- Sage’s Remedy
- Maim
A compact ranged taunt that scales with Max Health to provide a self-heal. It also applies Major Maim, reducing boss damage dealt. With Major and Minor Breach typically covered elsewhere, this skill allows you to replace traditional options like Pierce Armor or Frost Clench with a more efficient multi-use alternative.
- Soul Burst
- Damage Shield

Playing as an Off Tank in ESO
Off Tanking in ESO trials is about adaptability, awareness, and support. Your role is to stabilise encounters, control secondary threats, and ensure the Main Tank and damage dealers can focus on their responsibilities without distraction. While you may not always hold the primary boss, your positioning, add control, and debuff coverage directly influence how smoothly the group performs.
Trial performance as an Off Tank requires strong encounter knowledge and the ability to react quickly to shifting mechanics. You are often responsible for managing split phases, handling additional enemies, stepping into a secondary Main Tank role when required, or covering gaps in group composition. Managing your resources effectively while maintaining high Ultimate uptime is just as important as raw survivability.
With subclassing and scribing, Off Tanks now have more freedom than ever to optimise around group needs. The role has evolved into a flexible utility engine, capable of accelerating Ultimate rotations, amplifying group damage, and adapting to the unique demands of each trial.
Mastering the Off Tank role is less about following a fixed setup and more about understanding what your group lacks in any given encounter. Adjust your gear, subclassing, Champion Points, and skill choices accordingly, and you will consistently provide value across all trial environments.
