10 Fun & Free Mobile MMORPGs 2024

While you can’t beat a good MMORPG on a high performing PC or even on a console these days, there are some quality MMORPGs that are available on mobile devices. Perfect for those times where you crave some fun combat while on the move or maybe a touch of fishing and character progression to distract you from dinner at the in-laws, or even an auto-playing game to run while at work.

Mobile MMORPGs can be great for easy accessibility and these game are typically free to play, but large amount of the games your find on mobile devices are often littered with ads, auto-playing and even worse Pay-to-Win and microtransactions!

In this article we’re looking at the best mobile MMORPGs with active developers who are still updating the games. We’ll be looking at if they are fun, how much auto-play is involved and how bad the pay to win is!

Old School Runescape (OSRS)

  • Description: A classic MMORPG that brings the full RuneScape experience to mobile devices, offering a vast open world, deep skill system, and engaging questlines. OSRS is known for its nostalgic value and a strong community-driven approach.
  • Monetization: Primarily subscription-based for full access to all skills and areas. It’s considered fair, as paying mainly accelerates progress rather than giving a direct competitive edge.
  • Our Thoughts: OSRS is a timeless classic MMORPG and with it’s cross play ability, it means you can keep on progressing while on the move. It’s obviously a bit more difficult playing on mobile in comparison to PC as the UI is effectively the same, but this doesn’t stop you from enjoying the game and progressing your skill lines. The game is still being updated on a regular basis with a lot of daily active players, making this one of the top MMORPGs on Mobile.

Moonlight Blade

  • Description: Brand new mobile MMORPG set in an expansive Wuxia-inspired ancient China, Moonlight Blade offers players high-flying martial arts combat and exploration in a visually stunning open world. Players can deeply customize their characters and embark on story-driven quests while also participating in a range of PvE, PvP and Profession activities.
  • Monetization: This free-to-play MMORPG includes cosmetic and convenience item purchases. There does seem to be some aspects of Pay-2-Win.
  • Our Thoughts: This game took me by surprise. It’s graphically great, its fully voice acted (although not in English, but has subtitles) and the style of the game feels new and refreshing. The combat is fast paced and exciting, the martial arts aspect allows for some fun combos. The story and cutscenes are all very engaging and the character customisation is really vast. For a mobile game this feels like a must play.

Albion Online

  • Description: A sandbox MMORPG set in a medieval fantasy world where players can farm, trade, and engage in combat. The game emphasizes player-driven economy, PvP and territory control.
  • Monetization: Free-to-play with a premium subscription option that offers accelerated progress and additional benefits. The game strives to maintain a balanced environment, making it relatively fair in terms of monetization.
  • Our Thoughts: This is another cross play MMORPG which can be played both on PC and Mobile. It’s a fairly simple game on the surface, but it gets more detailed as you progress. Its also a lot of fun with a variety of content to do, but it can be slightly more difficult dealing with hard combat situations on mobile especially PvP. I personally love to play this on mobile to do fishing and gathering and also harvest and plant crops on the farm in my stronghold. It’s a great companion to the PC version of the game.

Lineage 2: Revolution

  • Description: A mobile adaptation of the classic MMORPG, offering large-scale battles, beautiful graphics, and an expansive world. It’s known for its clan-based system, dungeons, boss fights and competitive PvP.
  • Monetization: Features a mix of cosmetic items and pay-to-advance faster options, which can introduce P2W aspects, especially in the competitive scene.
  • Our Thoughts: This is a fully fledge MMORPG in your pocket. It’s an auto-playing game, auto combat, auto questing, auto dungeons, everything is automated. In some aspects this is fine because it makes certain parts easier since you’re playing on a small screen, but you don’t really do a whole lot yourself, just make sure to manually move your character out of AoEs when fighting bosses! Since the game is a little bit old now you will skip ahead to level 320 and be given a ton of stuff in the beginning along with skipping the MSQ to chapter 20. It’s nice to be given a skip to catch up to long serving players but you don’t really know what’s going on, some of the cutscenes and voice over are decent and a surprising addition. The P2W isn’t appealing but it’s a nice side game to run while working if nothing else.

Evil Lands: MMO RPG

  • Description: A fantasy action MMORPG with great visuals, offering both co-op and PvP modes. Players can explore, complete quests, and fight against various creatures in a mystical world.
  • Monetization: Utilizes in-app purchases for cosmetic items and progress accelerators. It does offer ways to purchase power, buy materials and gold so there are pay-to-win aspects.
  • Our Thoughts: This is one game I’ve played a lot a while back, it kind of gives me some old Elder Scrolls vibes. It’s a fun combat story MMO where you kill enemies, explore and progress your character. It’s quite grindy and it does get quite hard very quickly, mostly because a lot of area just swarm you with enemies when you go to them, so rather than fighting 1v1 you can easily pull 5+ enemies so you need to get good at kiting! The combat is semi-auto where it auto attacks and auto switches but you will be to move the character and activate certain abilities. Overall a pretty fun game that you can easily end up sinking quite a bit of time into.

Villagers & Heroes

  • Description: A fantasy MMORPG that emphasizes cooperative play, featuring housing, crafting, and a player-driven economy. It offers a rich storytelling experience and a friendly community.
  • Monetization: Adopts a fair monetization strategy with optional purchases for convenience and cosmetics. It’s designed to be enjoyable without spending money, avoiding P2W mechanics.
  • Our Thoughts: This is a solid mobile MMO with a variety of content, raid bosses and a really decent main story quest. Visually it has a more of a vibrant stylized and cartoonish appearance similar to World of Warcraft. The combat is fairly active and fun with a range of classes and playstyles, and the Lightning Warrior was a particular new idea I hadn’t seen before.

Black Desert Mobile

  • Description: Known for its stunning graphics and action-packed combat, this game brings the high-quality MMORPG experience of Black Desert to mobile devices. It features extensive character customization, dynamic combat, and an in-depth world.
  • Monetization: Includes microtransactions for cosmetic items, pets, and convenience features. There’s some concern over P2W elements, as certain purchases can significantly impact gameplay.
  • Our Thoughts: Clear some space on your device because this is a big one. If you’re an MMORPG fan then you need to try BDO Mobile. This is a fast paced, beautiful game, at the start you get a good story with full voice acting and I actually prefer the mobile game to the desktop version. The combat is nice, there are some auto aspect to it if you choose to turn it on and the option to buy auto questing. The only major downside is the store, where you can just pay to win on many levels but you can also just grind through the game. If you’re not worried too much about being competitive with other players but want to sit back and enjoy a great game then this is the one.

Adventure Quest 3D

  • Description: A cross-platform MMORPG with a quirky and engaging world. It offers real-time combat, a class system, and regular updates. The game is known for its humour and community-centric approach.
  • Monetization: Primarily uses a fair model with cosmetic items and a one-time membership option. It avoids P2W elements, focusing on equal opportunities for progress.
  • Our Thoughts: Adventure Quest is a funny cartoon style MMORPG with plenty of quests and humorous dialogue. You’ll bump into a range of enemies and bosses, complete dungeons and fight other players in PvP. It has a really nice flow to it, you’ll see other playing running around even at the start and it’s a really easy pick up and play type of game. The store is mostly just cosmetic items so the game avoids the typical mobile P2W and you’ll even get a free gift emailed to you upon joining which is a nice touch.

Perfect World Mobile

  • Description: A revival of the classic PC MMORPG, this game offers a vast open world, flight exploration, and extensive character customization. It’s known for its fantasy setting and rich storytelling.
  • Monetization: Features in-app purchases that can impact gameplay, leaning towards P2W. Players can buy items that enhance power and speed up progression.
  • Our Thoughts: Playing this game, it’s easy to think this is a new release that might be in beta or early access with how unfinished it feels from the first moment playing. The game has been out for years and has also just been ported onto Steam. It’s a auto-playing game for the most part and there doesn’t seem to be a way to stop it from auto questing other than closing down the game. It’s a decent looking game but its not really that fun, it’s heavily pay to win and it’s genuinely a shock how highly it’s rated on the app store.

Celtic Heroes Mobile

  • Description: A 3D MMORPG set in a mythical Celtic world, offering open-world exploration, dungeons, and clan wars. It focuses on cooperative gameplay and community engagement.
  • Monetization: More on the fair side, with in-app purchases mainly focusing on cosmetics and some convenience items. It aims to maintain a balanced experience for all players.
  • Our Thoughts: This mobile MMORPG is a bit older than some of the others on this list and it’s noticeable nowadays. It’s still a good mobile MMO game which will keep you occupied for hours. It has more of a retro style and is a bit more basic than some of the more modern games, but if that’s your thing then it’s well worth a try.
