Class Masteries arrived in The Elder Scrolls Online with Update 50, giving pure class builds a new reason to exist alongside Subclassing.
Rather than being a major progression system or something you need to grind for, Class Masteries are essentially a new set of passive choices available to max level characters who stay dedicated to one class. Once you have reached level 50 in all three of your class skill lines and are not using Subclassing, you can choose two Class Mastery passives from the five available to your class.
These passives are designed to reinforce class identity while ZOS continues working through larger individual class reworks over time. Some Class Masteries improve existing class mechanics, some add stronger group support, and others provide useful defensive, sustain, or Ultimate generation bonuses.
For Tanks, the value varies massively from class to class. Some passives are clearly more useful for Damage Dealers or Healers, while others could genuinely improve how certain Tank classes perform in dungeons, Trials, and organised group content.
Whether you’re running dungeons, Trials, or simply looking to optimise your build, this guide covers the best ESO Tank Class Masteries for every class, explaining how they work and which options are worth using in Update 50.

What Are Class Masteries?
Class Masteries are new passive abilities introduced in ESO Update 50 as part of Season Zero.
Each of ESO’s seven classes now has access to five unique Class Mastery passives, but you can only activate two of them at a time. These passives are only available when playing a pure class, meaning they are hidden while using the Subclassing system.
To use Class Masteries, your character must:
Have reached level 50 in all three class skill lines.
Not be actively using Subclassing.
That means Class Masteries are not really a separate grind or progression system. They are more of a reward for staying with your original class rather than mixing abilities from multiple classes through Subclassing.
Many of the new passives build on existing class mechanics. For example, some improve Ultimate generation, some expand existing class passives, some provide group buffs, and others improve survivability or sustain.
From a Tank perspective, the key question is not simply “which passives are strongest?” but rather which passives actually help you do your job better as a Tank. That means looking at survivability, group utility, Ultimate generation, sustain, debuff uptime, and whether the passive can realistically be activated during real dungeon or Trial gameplay.
Arcanist Tank Class Masteries
Arcanists gain several strong Class Mastery options for Tanking, particularly when it comes to survivability and sustain. However, they find themselves in an interesting position. While these passives make Arcanist Tanks stronger individually, their most valuable group-oriented mastery is often easier for an Arcanist Healer to maintain.
As a result, Arcanist Tanks become noticeably stronger in Update 50, but they may not necessarily become more desirable in highly optimised Trial groups.
Erudite's Rigor
Master the archaic and forge new runes of conflict. Upgrades Fatewoven Armor to inflict Minor Cowardice on your attacker while granting Major Vitality to you and your group for 4 seconds. You gain 1 Ultimate for every Crux you have. These effects can occur once every 2 seconds.
Erudite’s Rigor enhances Fatewoven Armor, causing attackers to suffer Minor Cowardice while granting Major Vitality to you and nearby allies. It also provides additional Ultimate generation based on your current amount of Crux.
This is a simple but effective mastery that requires very little effort to benefit from. The combination of increased group survivability and extra Ultimate generation makes it a solid all-round choice for both dungeon and Trial Tanks.
Fate Realigned
Be the hand that guides the weave of fate. Upgrades rank 2 of Implacable Outcome to generate maximum Crux, up to once every 15 seconds. After this effect triggers you gain 300 Weapon and Spell Damage for 25 seconds.
Fate Realigned upgrades Implacable Outcome, which normally grants Ultimate whenever you consume Crux.
For Tanks, the real strength comes from its interaction with Impervious Runeward. Since Impervious Runeward consumes Crux to provide a powerful damage shield and self-heal, Fate Realigned immediately restores your Crux when it activates. This allows you to quickly regain the benefits of passives such as Healing Tides, Hideous Clarity, and Fated Fortune while making it easier to chain together powerful defensive abilities.
While it provides little direct group utility, Fate Realigned is arguably the strongest defensive Class Mastery available to Arcanist Tanks and significantly improves both survivability and sustain.
Ink-Scribe's Verve
Illuminate body and mind with glimmering ink. While in combat, when you heal or overheal a total of 100000 Health, you generate a Crux and grant you and your group members Major Force for 10 seconds, increasing Critical Damage by 20%.
Ink-Scribe’s Verve is the mastery that offers the greatest benefit to organised groups. By healing or overhealing in combat, it generates Crux and grants Major Force to both you and your group.
The issue is that maintaining high uptime on Major Force is considerably easier for a Healer than it is for a Tank. Healers can continuously apply AoE healing across the group, whereas Tanks have fewer opportunities to trigger the effect consistently.
Arcanist Tanks can still achieve respectable uptime by pairing Ink-Scribe’s Verve with Fate Realigned and regularly consuming Crux through Impervious Runeward for the additional healing and overhealing. However, it requires much more effort than it does from the healer role.
Recommended Arcanist Tank Class Masteries
For most Arcanist Tanks, Fate Realigned is the clear first choice thanks to the survivability, sustain, and excellent synergy it has with Impervious Runeward.
The second slot is more dependent on your group composition. If Major Force is not already being maintained, Ink-Scribe’s Verve provides exceptional group value. If that buff is already covered by another player, Erudite’s Rigor becomes an attractive alternative thanks to its added utility and Ultimate generation.
- Recommended: Fate Realigned + Ink-Scribe’s Verve (or Erudite’s Rigor if Major Force is already covered)
Dragonknight Tank Class Masteries
Following the Dragonknight class refresh, Dragonknights arguably required the least help from Class Masteries. Already one of the strongest and most complete Tank classes in ESO, Update 50 simply gives them even more utility and survivability rather than fundamentally changing how they play.
The biggest limitation of some Dragonknight Class Masteries isn’t their power, but whether another Dragonknight in your group is already providing the same buffs. Despite that, Dragonknights gain several excellent options for both dungeon and Trial content.
Lead From The Front
Let others be swept along in the wake of your flame. Activating rank 2 of The Storm Voice grants you and group members within 28 meters of you Major Berserk and Protection for 1 second per 15 Ultimate spent, increasing damage done and reducing damage taken by 10%.
Lead From The Front upgrades The Storm Voice passive, which normally restores Health, Magicka and Stamina whenever you cast an Ultimate.
In addition to the resource restoration, this mastery grants Major Berserk and Major Protection to both you and nearby group members based on the amount of Ultimate spent. Since Dragonknights excel at generating and using Ultimate, this translates into strong offensive and defensive group support.
The only drawback is that many organised groups already run Dragonknight Damage Dealers who may provide the same benefits. However, if these buffs are not already covered, Lead From The Front is one of the strongest group support masteries available to Tanks.
Resolute Defense
You are as unyielding as a mountain. Each second you remain Bracing, you increase the amount of damage you block by 6%, up to 5 times. Blocking damage has a 20% chance to restore 500 Stamina. This effect can occur once every block cost.
Resolute Defense is arguably the most Tank-focused Class Mastery available to Dragonknights.
The longer you continuously block, the more damage you mitigate, building up to an additional 30% block mitigation while also giving you a chance to restore Stamina whenever you successfully block an attack.
The effect is simple but extremely effective. Difficult encounters often force Tanks into extended blocking phases, making the additional survivability and sustain incredibly valuable in both dungeons and Trials.
Booming Voice
Let your voice echo across the peaks. Activating rank 2 of The Storm Voice now also grants 5 Health, Magicka, and Stamina Recovery for every Ultimate spent for 10 seconds after a delay of 15 seconds.
Booming Voice also upgrades The Storm Voice, rewarding you with additional Health, Magicka and Stamina Recovery after spending Ultimate.
The amount of recovery scales with the Ultimate spent, meaning expensive Ultimates can provide substantial bursts of sustain. Spending 250 Ultimate, for example, grants 1,250 Health, Magicka and Stamina Recovery for 10 seconds.
While the sustain is respectable, the benefit comes in short windows rather than being permanently active, which makes it slightly less attractive than some of the other options.
Inexorable Descent
Be as the landslide. Let nothing stop you. Improves your Landslide passive to increase the potency of your damage done, healing done, and damage shield strength by 1% per stack.
Inexorable Descent upgrades the Landslide passive, increasing your damage done, healing done and damage shield strength by up to 10%.
Unlike Booming Voice, this mastery is incredibly easy to maintain. As long as you’re actively attacking enemies, you’ll naturally keep your Landslide stacks active, resulting in near permanent increases to self-healing and shielding.
Although it doesn’t provide much direct group utility, the consistency and uptime make Inexorable Descent an excellent option for Dragonknight Tanks who want to further improve their own survivability.
Recommended Dragonknight Tank Class Masteries
For most Dragonknight Tanks, Lead From The Front and Resolute Defense are the strongest combination. Together they provide an excellent balance of group support, survivability and sustain.
If your group already has Major Berserk and Major Protection covered, or if you simply want to focus more on personal survivability, Inexorable Descent is an outstanding alternative and may ultimately prove more valuable than Booming Voice thanks to its near permanent uptime.
- Recommended: Lead From The Front + Resolute Defense
- Alternative: Lead From The Front + Inexorable Descent
Nightblade Tank Class Masteries
Nightblade may be one of the biggest winners of the entire Class Mastery system. Already known for excellent Ultimate generation and strong survivability, Update 50 gives the class even more support potential while also introducing a powerful damage amplification effect that could dramatically increase its value in organised groups.
For years, Nightblade has been one of the least represented Tank classes in ESO. With these new Class Masteries, that could change very quickly.
Cutthroat's Focus
This duel will be their last. For you, it’s just another dance. Activating a Nightblade ability while bracing causes you to dodge attacks for 0.3 seconds. Whenever you dodge an attack, your attacker’s psyche suffers, increasing their damage taken by 5% for 5 seconds, increasing to 20 seconds against monsters.
Cutthroat’s Focus is arguably the most impactful Class Mastery available to Nightblade Tanks and has the potential to completely change the class’s place in the meta.
By activating a Nightblade ability while blocking, you briefly gain the ability to dodge incoming attacks. Successfully dodging an attack causes the enemy to take 5% increased damage for up to 20 seconds against monsters.
While 5% increased damage may not sound dramatic, from a Trial perspective it is an incredibly powerful effect and one that optimised groups are unlikely to ignore.
There are some limitations. Triggering the effect is easier against groups of enemies than bosses with slower attack patterns due to the small dodge window. However, once applied, the lengthy duration makes refreshing the debuff relatively forgiving.
Most importantly, this mastery strongly favours Main Tanks. Damage Dealers and Healers cannot reliably trigger the effect, while Off Tanks are not always positioned on the priority target. As a result, Nightblade suddenly brings a form of group utility that no other Tank currently provides.
An Eye for Exploitation
Every strike, every stab, is a step towards execution. Increases your Weapon and Spell Damage by up to 2000, based on your target’s missing Health. Reduces your damage taken by up to 20%, based on your attacker’s missing Health. Both effects are halved against targets with Battle Spirit.
An Eye for Exploitation is a much more defensive option.
As enemies lose Health, you gain increasing damage reduction, reaching up to 20% reduced damage taken during execute phases.
This makes the mastery particularly valuable during difficult encounters where incoming damage becomes more dangerous as the fight progresses. Encounters such as vDSR and vKA Hard Mode are excellent examples, where execute phases can often be some of the most demanding moments for a Tank.
Although not every encounter requires additional survivability, An Eye for Exploitation is an excellent progression option and a strong choice for Tanks looking to maximise their durability.
Share the Spoils
Secrets and coin are tools as sharp as the daggers you wield. Upgrades rank 2 of Transfer to grant group members 250 Magicka and Stamina, 2 Ultimate, and doubles the Ultimate you gain when it activates.
Share the Spoils upgrades the Transfer passive, doubling the Ultimate generated from Siphoning abilities while also providing additional resources and Ultimate generation to nearby group members.
Nightblade was already one of the strongest Ultimate generation classes in ESO, and this mastery pushes that strength even further. For Off Tanks or support-oriented builds focused on maximising Warhorn uptime, Share the Spoils becomes an extremely attractive option.
Nocturnal Inspiration
The Night Mistress rewards those who strike without reservation. Upgrades rank 2 of Hemorrhage to have a chance to generate 2 Ultimate. This effect can occur once every 0.3 seconds and the chance is equal to your Weapon Critical chance
Nocturnal Inspiration upgrades Hemorrhage, giving critical strikes a chance to generate additional Ultimate.
Because the effect scales with Weapon Critical, Tanks will not benefit as consistently as Damage Dealers. However, Tanks continuously apply damage-over-time effects, status effects and debuffs, creating plenty of opportunities for the passive to trigger.
By itself, Nocturnal Inspiration is a solid source of extra Ultimate generation. Combined with Share the Spoils, however, it creates an incredibly potent Ultimate generation package capable of producing exceptional Warhorn uptime throughout an encounter.
Recommended Nightblade Tank Class Masteries
For Main Tanks, Cutthroat’s Focus is the standout mastery and potentially one of the most impactful Tank passives introduced in Update 50. The ability to increase enemy damage taken by 5% gives Nightblade a unique form of group utility that could make it highly desirable in organised groups.
Pairing Cutthroat’s Focus with Share the Spoils creates an exceptional balance of damage amplification, Ultimate generation and group support, allowing Nightblade to fully lean into its strengths.
An Eye for Exploitation remains a fantastic situational option for progression groups or encounters with particularly dangerous execute phases, providing up to 20% additional damage reduction exactly when incoming damage becomes most threatening.
For Off Tanks and Ultimate-generation focused builds, Share the Spoils and Nocturnal Inspiration combine to create one of the strongest Ultimate generation packages available, resulting in exceptional Warhorn uptime and increased support for the entire group.
- Recommended Main Tank Setup: Cutthroat’s Focus + Share the Spoils
- Situational Alternative: Cutthroat’s Focus + An Eye for Exploitation
- Recommended Off Tank Setup: Share the Spoils + Nocturnal Inspiration
Necromancer Tank Class Masteries
Necromancer Tanks are firmly back in the conversation with Update 50. Already known for their excellent group support and Ultimate generation, the new Class Masteries further strengthen both of those areas while also providing additional survivability options for newer Tanks.
For organised groups, Necromancer may once again become one of the most desirable Tank classes in ESO.
Veil's Forfeit
Call souls back from an early grave. Only you may grant them release. While you are in combat, directly healing a target below 66% Health relinquishes them from death’s clutches and allows you to use a corpse consuming ability against them within 10 seconds, up to once every second. Extends the duration of Major Vulnerability you apply by 50%.
Veil’s Forfeit is arguably the most important Class Mastery available to Necromancer Tanks, increasing the duration of all Major Vulnerability effects you apply by 50%.
From a group perspective, this is enormous.
Turning Tide can now potentially reach 100% uptime, Stonehulk Domination can exceed 100% uptime and overlap between applications, Archdruid Devyric becomes significantly more effective at a 70% uptime, and even Glacial Colossus benefits from the increased duration to 18 seconds.
In practice, this allows a single Necromancer Tank to maintain Major Vulnerability far more easily and reliably than before, potentially removing the need for additional sources entirely.
Although the corpse interaction attached to the mastery is useful, the extended Major Vulnerability duration is undoubtedly the main attraction and one of the biggest reasons to consider a Necromancer Tank.
Malevolent Promise
Death’s knell is a familiar song. Share it with your enemies. Upgrades rank 2 of Corpse Consumption to mark the closest non-player enemy to you with death’s touch for 6 seconds, allowing you to use a corpse consuming ability on them. Consuming or replacing this effect forcibly triggers rank 1 of Corpse Consumption’s Ultimate generation and triggers rank 2 of Death Gleaning. This effect can occur once every 2 seconds.
Malevolent Promise upgrades the Corpse Consumption passive and may prove to be one of the strongest Ultimate generation Class Masteries in the game.
Normally, Corpse Consumption grants 10 Ultimate when consuming a corpse, but only once every 16 seconds. Malevolent Promise fundamentally changes this interaction.
After consuming a corpse, the nearest enemy is marked with Death’s Touch, allowing that enemy to be treated as a corpse while still alive. Consuming Death’s Touch triggers the first stage of Corpse Consumption, granting 5 Ultimate.
Most importantly, this Death’s Touch interaction is not limited by the normal 16-second cooldown, but rather only the 2 second cooldown of this Mastery Passive.
In practice, Necromancer Tanks can continuously layer additional Ultimate generation on top of the normal Corpse Consumption passive rather than replacing it. Tanks already using corpse-generating abilities such as Spirit Mender, Beckoning Armor, Skeletal Arcanist, or Blastbones can generate enormous amounts of Ultimate throughout an encounter.
I expect Malevolent Promise to be considerably stronger than many players initially realise and one of the biggest winners of the entire Class Mastery system.
Pound of Flesh
Knock upon death’s door and demand your due. When you take damage you have a 10% chance to heal 1600 Health and restore 5% of your missing Stamina, up to once per second. This chance increases by 1% for every missing Health percent you have and the healing is based off your Max Health.
Pound of Flesh is the more defensive option.
Whenever you take damage, you have a chance to restore Health and recover a percentage of your missing Stamina. The lower your Health becomes, the higher the chance of the effect triggering.
Although it doesn’t provide the same level of group utility as Veil’s Forfeit or Malevolent Promise, it offers a reliable source of passive healing and sustain without requiring any additional effort from the player.
For newer Tanks, progression groups, or anyone learning difficult content, Pound of Flesh can be an extremely comfortable option.
Recommended Necromancer Tank Class Masteries
For organised content, Veil’s Forfeit and Malevolent Promise are easily the standout combination.
Veil’s Forfeit turns Necromancer into one of the strongest and most reliable Major Vulnerability providers in the game, while Malevolent Promise pushes the class’s already impressive Ultimate generation to another level.
For players who prefer additional survivability, Pound of Flesh remains an excellent alternative and provides a steady source of healing and sustain throughout an encounter.
- Recommended Setup: Veil’s Forfeit + Malevolent Promise
- Defensive Alternative: Veil’s Forfeit + Pound of Flesh
Sorcerer Tank Class Masteries
Sorcerer Tanks gain several strong Class Masteries in Update 50, although unlike Nightblade and Necromancer, many of their most valuable group buffs can also be maintained by other roles.
Fortunately, Sorcerers don’t really need to rely on unique group utility to stand out. Thanks to their exceptional sustain, shielding and survivability, Sorcerers are already among the most self-sufficient Tank classes in ESO, and these new masteries only reinforce those strengths.
Calculated Defense
Success is a certainty when nothing is left to chance. While beginning to use a Sorcerer ability or an ability with a cast time, you gain a damage shield for 0.5 seconds that can absorb 5280 damage. This effect is based off your Max Health. If the shield does not break, you and nearby group members gain 6% Weapon and Spell Damage for 20 seconds.
Calculated Defense grants you a Max Health scaling damage shield whenever you cast a Sorcerer ability with a cast time. If that shield survives its brief duration, you and nearby group members gain 6% Weapon and Spell Damage for 20 seconds.
From a group perspective, this is an excellent buff. The challenge is that Tanks naturally spend most of their time standing in front of the boss, making it harder to avoid damage during the shield’s short duration compared to Damage Dealers or Healers.
Fortunately, the timing window is very small and can often be played around encounter mechanics. It also works particularly well with abilities such as Dark Deal, providing additional protection while channelling.
While it requires more management than some other masteries, Calculated Defense can provide valuable support to the group when the buff isn’t already covered elsewhere.
Sphere of Influence
Magicka extends your reach, a benefit to those who fight beside you. Casting a damage shield on yourself or an ally grants an additional shield that absorbs up to 2400 damage for 4 seconds and 225 Health, Magicka, and Stamina Recovery for 12 seconds. The shield scales off the higher of your Max Health or Max Magicka, and is capped at 25% of the target’s Max Health.
Sphere of Influence is a much more defensive option.
Whenever you apply a damage shield, you gain an additional shield and increased Health, Magicka and Stamina Recovery. This works exceptionally well with Regenerative Ward, a skill many Sorcerer Tanks are already using for its healing, shielding and group sustain.
The result is even greater survivability and resource management layered on top of one of the class’s strongest defensive tools.
It may not be the most exciting mastery available, but it’s simple, reliable and highly effective.
Conservation of Energy
Conservation of Energy is arguably the standout Class Mastery for Sorcerer Tanks.
Normally, Blood Magic only activates when casting Dark Magic abilities. This mastery expands the passive to trigger from almost every ability with a cost.
The result is incredible sustain. Whenever you’re missing Health, Blood Magic provides healing. If you’re already healthy, the effect instead restores Magicka and Stamina. Since Tanks are constantly casting abilities throughout an encounter, this mastery provides a near constant stream of healing and resources with virtually no effort required.
It also pairs exceptionally well with Regenerative Ward. By maintaining strong shields and healing, you’ll spend less time requiring emergency healing and more time converting Blood Magic into additional Magicka and Stamina recovery.
Simple, reliable and incredibly effective, Conservation of Energy embodies everything a Tank wants from a Class Mastery.
Recommended Sorcerer Tank Class Masteries
For most Sorcerer Tanks, Conservation of Energy is the clear first choice thanks to the incredible sustain and survivability it provides.
The second slot largely comes down to your priorities. Calculated Defense offers excellent group utility when the Weapon and Spell Damage buff isn’t already being provided elsewhere, while Sphere of Influence focuses more on personal survivability and resource sustain.
Either way, Update 50 further strengthens Sorcerer’s identity as one of the most self-sufficient Tank classes in ESO.
- Recommended Setup: Conservation of Energy + Calculated Defense
- Defensive Alternative: Conservation of Energy + Sphere of Influence
Templar Tank Class Masteries
Templars receive a surprisingly nice boost from the Class Mastery system, gaining access to both additional survivability and a useful group damage buff that helps the class carve out more of a niche in organised content.
While none of these passives completely redefine the class, they do strengthen Templar’s identity and provide several compelling reasons to remain a pure class.
Bright Harbinger
Light’s banner instills hope. You are its bearer. Upgrades rank 2 of Illuminate to also grant Bright Harbinger for the duration, which grants 300 Weapon and Spell Damage to allies and doubles for you.
Bright Harbinger upgrades the Illuminate passive, which normally grants Minor Sorcery to your group when casting a Dawn’s Wrath ability.
This mastery adds an additional Weapon and Spell Damage buff for your allies while providing an even greater benefit to yourself.
Although the increased personal damage is naturally more attractive to Damage Dealers, the real strength of Bright Harbinger for Tanks lies in the additional group support. If your group doesn’t already have another Templar maintaining this effect, it gives Templar Tanks a genuinely useful damage buff and helps them bring something more unique to organised groups.
Devout Guardian
Radiant is the shield that pushes back the dark. While Sacred Ground is active, you gain a damage shield for 6 seconds, up to once every 6 seconds. The shield absorbs up to 3200 damage and provides 300 Health, Magicka, and Stamina Recovery while active. If the shield breaks, you gain 10 Ultimate.
Devout Guardian builds upon Sacred Ground, granting you a damage shield and increased Health, Magicka and Stamina Recovery while Sacred Ground is active. If the shield breaks, you also gain Ultimate.
One of the strengths of this mastery is how naturally it fits into existing Templar gameplay. Most Templar Tanks are already standing in Rune Focus or Cleansing Ritual, meaning Sacred Ground is easily maintained without requiring any changes to your rotation.
The result is a simple but effective combination of survivability, sustain and occasional Ultimate generation.
Steadfast Candescence
Your conviction is unwavering. Light gives no quarter. Sacred Ground now activates and refreshes itself while Bracing. Increases the amount of damage you can block by 20% while stationary.
Steadfast Candescence is the most Tank-focused Class Mastery available to Templars.
In addition to increasing your block mitigation while stationary, the mastery automatically activates and refreshes Sacred Ground whenever you block. Since Sacred Ground already provides Minor Mending and additional block mitigation through the Sacred Ground passive, this further reinforces one of the class’s greatest strengths.
For difficult encounters and progression content where survivability is the priority, Steadfast Candescence makes Templars exceptionally durable and is likely to be one of the most popular choices among dedicated Tanks.
Recommended Templar Tank Class Masteries
For organised groups, Bright Harbinger is likely the standout option thanks to the additional group damage it provides and the unique support it brings to the class.
The second slot largely comes down to your priorities. Steadfast Candescence offers exceptional defensive value and is arguably the strongest overall option for survivability, while Devout Guardian provides a comfortable mix of shielding, sustain and passive Ultimate generation.
For progression content and most general Tanking situations, Bright Harbinger and Steadfast Candescence are likely to be the combination most players gravitate towards.
- Recommended Setup: Bright Harbinger + Steadfast Candescence
- Alternative Setup: Bright Harbinger + Devout Guardian
Warden Tank Class Masteries
Warden gains access to some exceptionally powerful Class Masteries in Update 50. In fact, several of them provide some of the strongest support effects available to any Tank.
The problem isn’t power, it’s competition. Many of these same buffs are also highly desirable on a Warden Healer, meaning Tanks won’t always be the preferred source. However, if your group doesn’t already have a Warden covering these effects, Warden Tanks become incredibly attractive support options.
Tundra's Maw
Expose your enemies to unrelenting cold. Applying Chill to an enemy also applies Major Brittle for 2 seconds, increasing their Critical Damage taken by 20%.
Tundra’s Maw is arguably one of the strongest Class Masteries in the entire system.
Every Chilled status effect you apply also inflicts Major Brittle, increasing the target’s Critical Damage taken. With Nightblade Tanks now introducing additional Critical Damage bonuses through Cutthroat’s Focus, the value of Major Brittle becomes even more important for groups looking to maximise their damage output.
The downside is that Major Brittle only lasts for two seconds, meaning maintaining good uptime requires frequent Chilled applications. Fortunately, Wardens have numerous ways to accomplish this through Frost Staff skills, frost enchantments, Impaling Shards and other frost-based abilities.
Although it requires active management, the payoff is enormous and makes Tundra’s Maw one of the strongest support tools available to a Tank.
Bountiful Harvest
Share in the spoils of nature’s abundance. Upgrades rank 2 of Nature’s Gift to grant you and your group members Major Heroism for 3 seconds and an additional 125 Magicka and Stamina, up to once ever 2 seconds.
Bountiful Harvest upgrades the Nature’s Gift passive, adding additional resource restoration while granting Major Heroism to both you and your group.
For Tanks, abilities such as Budding Seeds allow the mastery to trigger reasonably well, providing extra sustain alongside valuable group support. However, this is another effect that a Warden Healer can often maintain more easily thanks to their constant healing output.
Even so, Major Heroism remains one of the most desirable buffs in organised content, making Bountiful Harvest an incredibly attractive option whenever the effect isn’t already covered elsewhere.
Green-Keeper's Hide
The twisting of seasons has tempered your will. Reduce your damage taken by 3% for every status effect active on your attacker, up to a maximum of 15%.
Green-Keeper’s Hide is the defensive option.
For every status effect affecting your attacker, you gain additional damage reduction, up to a maximum of 15%.
In organised groups, reaching this cap is surprisingly easy. Modern groups naturally apply numerous status effects and debuffs, while Wardens themselves contribute several more.
Although it lacks the group utility of the other masteries, 15% passive damage reduction is substantial and makes Green-Keeper’s Hide an excellent choice for progression groups, difficult encounters and Tanks looking for additional survivability.
Recommended Warden Tank Class Masteries
If your group requires the buffs, Tundra’s Maw and Bountiful Harvest are easily the strongest overall combination.
Tundra’s Maw provides access to one of the most valuable damage amplification effects in the game, while Bountiful Harvest adds Major Heroism and additional sustain to your support toolkit.
If survivability is the priority, Green-Keeper’s Hide is an excellent alternative and can provide an impressive amount of passive damage reduction throughout an encounter.
The only real drawback for Warden Tanks is that many groups may prefer a Warden Healer to provide these same benefits. However, if your group is missing a Warden entirely, these Class Masteries become some of the most attractive support tools available to any Tank.
- Recommended Setup: Tundra’s Maw + Bountiful Harvest
- Defensive Alternative: Tundra’s Maw + Green-Keeper’s Hide
Which Tank Classes Gain The Most From Class Masteries?
Every Tank class benefits from the new Class Mastery system, but some classes have clearly emerged as bigger winners than others.
Nightblade and Necromancer stand out the most. Nightblade finally gains a form of unique group utility that could make it one of the most desirable Main Tanks in organised groups, while Necromancer further strengthens its position as one of the game’s premier support Tanks thanks to easier Major Vulnerability uptime and even greater Ultimate generation.
Dragonknight and Warden also receive exceptionally strong Class Masteries, although many of their most valuable buffs can already be supplied by other players. If those effects aren’t already covered, both classes become extremely attractive options for group content.
Arcanist, Sorcerer and Templar perhaps don’t receive the same game-changing additions, but they all gain meaningful improvements that reinforce what they already do well. Whether that’s increased survivability, stronger sustain or additional group support, every class walks away stronger than before.
Perhaps the biggest takeaway from Update 50 is that Class Masteries don’t completely redefine Tanking in ESO. Instead, they reward players for remaining dedicated to a pure class while further strengthening each class’s unique identity.
For the first time in years, previously overlooked Tank classes such as Nightblade and Necromancer are firmly back in the conversation, and that’s ultimately a good thing for the health and diversity of ESO Tanking.
No matter which class you choose, every Tank remains capable of completing all content in the game. Class Masteries simply provide more ways to specialise, support your group and lean further into what makes each class unique.
