Don’t Lose Aggro Beginner Guide

Don’t Lose Aggro Beginner Guide (How to Tank Properly)

Don’t Lose Aggro might look simple, but actually tanking properly takes a lot more than just spamming taunt. This beginner guide covers aggro, toughness, abilities, and progression so you can stay in control and start finishing runs with confidence.

How Don’t Lose Aggro Works

If you’re jumping into Don’t Lose Aggro, the concept is simple:
you are the tank, keep enemies off your companion, survive the run, and do it as efficiently as possible.

But once you actually start playing, you’ll quickly realise it’s not just “spam taunt and win”.

Managing aggro, toughness, positioning, cooldowns, and your build choices is what separates a clean run from a failed one. If you lose control for even a few seconds, enemies will switch targets and your companion can get wiped out fast.

At its core, Don’t Lose Aggro is a roguelite take on MMO tanking.
Each run is different, you’ll unlock skills in a random order, choose between upgrades as you level, and adapt your build on the fly depending on what you’re given.

That means you won’t always get the “perfect” setup.
Good players aren’t just using strong builds they’re making smart decisions with what they have.

This Don’t Lose Aggro beginner guide breaks down everything you need to understand, from aggro mechanics to builds and progression, so you can improve quickly and start completing runs consistently.

Don’t Lose Aggro Beginner Guide

Game Modes & Objectives

Every game mode has a slightly different goal, but it all comes down to one thing:
control enemies, protect your companion, and complete the objective as efficiently as possible.

Dungeon Crawl Mode

Your goal here is simple: finish the run as fast as possible.

  • Pull multiple packs together to save time
  • Use mobility skills to move quickly between fights
  • Balance speed with control, if enemies slip onto your companion, you’ll lose time recovering

The best runs come from efficient routing and clean pulls, not just rushing blindly.

DLA Dungeon Crawl

Wave Defence

This is where your tanking fundamentals are really tested.

  • Enemies come from all directions
  • Your companion stays in the centre
  • A boss spawns after 5 minutes

Your objective is to prevent your companion from taking damage.

This is all about positioning yourself between enemies and your companion, using taunts at the right time and controlling large groups without losing aggro

The less damage your companion takes, the higher your ranking.

Boss Rush

Boss Rush is focused entirely on mechanics and control.

  • You start at a higher level with more abilities
  • Bosses will regularly target your companion
  • You need to react quickly and manage aggro perfectly
  • You have to manage mechanics that you don’t see in the other game modes

Success here comes from timing your taunts correctly, positioning for mechanics, maintaining control while still dealing damage.

DLA Boss Rush

Targeting, Taunt & Aggro Systems

Understanding how targeting, taunting, and aggro work together is key to controlling enemies properly.
If you lose control of any of these systems, enemies will quickly switch to your companion.

Targeting System

Don’t Lose Aggro uses an Action Targeting system by default.

  • The game automatically selects targets using a custom algorithm
  • It scans for enemies in front of you first, then around you
  • In most cases, you’ll target whatever is directly in the centre of your screen

This means your camera positioning matters.
If you’re not facing the right enemy, your abilities may hit the wrong target.

Classic Targeting (Optional)
You can switch to Classic Targeting (Keyboard & Mouse only):

  • Left Click (LMB) → Select target
  • Right Click (Hold RMB) → Rotate camera

This works more like a traditional MMO, giving you more precise control, but it’s less fluid than Action Targeting.

Target Swapping
No matter which system you use:

  • Pressing Tab cycles through available targets
  • This does not generate aggro, it only changes your selected target

Use this to quickly switch to enemies that are attacking your companion.

Taunt (Hard Control)

Taunt is your most reliable way to control enemies.

  • Forces enemies to attack you for a set duration
  • Applied through abilities like Taunt or Judgment
  • Can also appear as upgrades (e.g. Pull now also Taunts)

This is a guaranteed control tool, especially important for bosses.

However:

  • Bosses can lose taunt over time
  • You’ll need to reapply it at the right moment, not just spam it on cooldown
DLA Taunt Skill

Aggro (Threat System)

Aggro determines who enemies naturally want to attack.

For most non-boss enemies:

  • The health bar above their head also acts as an aggro meter
  • When they spawn, the bar is red (no aggro)
  • As you deal damage, the bar drops

Once it passes the marked threshold:

  • The bar turns green
  • The enemy is now focused on you

Toughness

Toughness is your primary defensive resource, shown as shield icons on your HUD.

Each stack provides 20% damage reduction, so keeping your Toughness up is key to surviving.

Some abilities generate Toughness, while others spend it, creating a simple generator and spender system.

For example:

  • Taunt costs 2 Toughness
  • Shield Throw restores 2 Toughness

Using this combo together lets you maintain mitigation while keeping enemies under control.

DLA Toughness

Abilities & Build System

Abilities give you your offensive, defensive, and control tools, and they’re what define your build each run.

You have 5 ability slots, each tied to a specific category: Mobility, Damage, Aggro, Utility and Special.

Abilities are randomly offered each run, you’ll unlock more options as you level up. Your starting ability depends on your equipped shield.

This means every run is different, you’ll need to adapt based on what you’re given, not just aim for one perfect build.

There is no global cooldown (GCD), but each ability has its own cooldown.

DLA Abilities

Ability Categories

Mobility (Slot 1)
Your main way to engage and reposition.

  1. Charge → Dash to a target, deal damage, knock down enemies, gain 1 Toughness
  2. Ground Slam → Leap forward, deal AoE damage, knock enemies, gain 1 Toughness

Damage (Slot 2)
Used to maintain aggro and clear enemies.

  1. Whirlwind (AoE) → Damages nearby enemies, gain 1 Toughness
  2. Retribution (Single Target) → Deals damage, triggers instantly when blocking, gain 1 Toughness

Aggro (Slot 3)
Your main control tools.

  1. Taunt → Forces target + nearby enemies to attack you (10s), costs 2 Toughness
  2. Judgment → Taunts and deals damage (10s), costs 1 Toughness

Utility (Slot 4)
Support and control abilities.

  1. Protect → Take damage instead of your companion for a short time, costs 1 Toughness
  2. Pull → Pulls enemies to you and roots them, costs 1 Toughness

Special (Slot 5)

  1. Shield Throw → Bounces between enemies and generates 2 Toughness

Passive Upgrades (Run Modifiers)
Alongside abilities, each run gives you passive upgrade choices. These can:

  • Add taunts to abilities
  • Increase damage or healing
  • Enhance how your abilities interact

These upgrades are what turn a basic setup into a strong build.

Progression, Levelling & Talent Points

As you play Don’t Lose Aggro, you’ll naturally level up by completing runs across any of the game modes.

How well you perform has a big impact on how much EXP you earn. Faster clears, keeping your companion safe, and achieving higher medals will all significantly increase your gains.

As your level increases, you’ll unlock:

  • New game modes and difficulty options
  • Additional abilities and build choices
  • New shields and companions
  • And most importantly, Talent Points

Talent Points

DLW Talent Points

Each time you level up, you earn a Talent Point, which can be spent in the training area outside the church.

These are split into three paths:

  • Offense → Increases your damage, reduces cooldowns, and can add extra effects like healing to abilities
  • Defense → Improves survivability through damage reduction, healing, dodge, and better Toughness sustain
  • Support → Enhances your companion and increases healing received

This is where you start to define your playstyle.

Shields & the Forge

As you level up, you’ll unlock new shields which can be equipped at the Forge.

Each shield provides a passive bonus and a starting ability for your run.

This starting ability can shape how your run begins and what builds are easier to create.

  • Crusader Shield starts with Whirlwind, making it strong for clearing groups in Dungeon and Wave modes
  • Disc Shield starts with Retribution, which is more suited to single-target fights like Boss Rush

Choosing the right shield for the mode you’re playing can make your runs much smoother.

DLA Forge Shields

Companions

Before starting a run in Don’t Lose Aggro, you can choose a companion to fight alongside you outside the church area.

  • Only one companion can be active at a time currently
  • Each companion has both passive and active abilities
  • These abilities are only available while the companion is alive

If your companion dies, your run doesn’t immediately end but it becomes significantly harder.

Companions are a core part of your build, effectively giving you a playstyle identity depending on which one you choose.

The Healer

The Healer is the most consistent and beginner-friendly companion, focused on sustain and survivability.

  • Passive → Heals you every few seconds
  • Active – Holy Ground → Creates a healing zone around you that also damages enemies

With the Healer, your gameplay revolves around grouping enemies together and using Holy Ground to deal damage while keeping yourself alive.

It can be used aggressively to clear large packs, or defensively as an emergency heal when you’re under pressure.

DLA Healer Companion

The Ranger

The Ranger is a more advanced companion that rewards good aggro control and scaling damage.

  • Passive → Fires arrows at enemies when they target you, dealing damage and providing small healing
  • Passive → Periodically teleports to a random enemy
  • Active → Explodes all arrows, dealing damage based on how many have been applied

With the Ranger, the more enemies you keep aggro on, the more value you get. However, killing enemies too quickly can reduce your healing, so there’s a balance between maintaining aggro and timing your damage.

A well-played Ranger can become extremely powerful, as each arrow increases the damage of the next active ability, allowing for massive scaling over time.

Boss Rush Mechanics Guide

Chained
The boss links you to your companion, dealing damage over time until the chain is broken.

  • The chain reapplies every 30 seconds
  • Deals constant damage while active

To deal with it, create distance quickly to break the chain before the damage ramps up.

DLA Boss Rush Chained Mechanic

Adds
Waves of enemies will periodically spawn and move into the arena.

You’ll need to:

  • Quickly pick up aggro on all adds
  • Keep them controlled so they don’t overwhelm your companion
  • Balance add control while still managing the boss

Fixate
The boss targets your companion and prepares a powerful frontal attack.

To handle this:

  • Move between the boss and your companion
  • Absorb the hit yourself to prevent heavy damage
