Fractured Online Leaves Early Access into Full Release

Fractured Online is finally hitting its full release today, and it’s been quite the journey! If you love sandbox MMORPGs with dynamic environments and robust player interactions, this game is worth checking out.

A Journey of Persistence and Passion

Fractured Online’s development hasn’t been smooth sailing. The passionate eight-person team at Dynamight Studios has been crafting this game for seven years, overcoming numerous challenges, including a rocky breakup with their publisher. Their dedication has brought us a game boasting dynamic environments, action combat, intricate crafting and economy systems, player-run cities, open-world housing, and thrilling endgame PvP content. But how much of this do they deliver on?

Player Population and Early Access Struggles

One big fundamental issue is player population. On Steam, the numbers have been extremely low, which can be discouraging. However, these figures don’t include those playing via the official Fractured Online launcher. Despite the sparse early access phase, there’s a dedicated core of players who have stuck with the game through thick and thin. Player counts are always typically lower in early access.

Key Updates and Improvements

With the full launch, several significant updates have been introduced:

  • New Server (Elysium): A fresh start server aimed at addressing balance and economy issues, enhancing the experience for new players.
  • Revamped Tutorial: A comprehensive tutorial to help newcomers get to grips with the game mechanics.
  • PvP Overhaul: New zone-based PvP rules reduce griefing and non-consensual PvP, giving players more control over their experience.
  • Bug Fixes: A range of fixes and quality-of-life improvements.

Visuals and Gameplay

Visually, Fractured Online has a style reminiscent of Albion Online. However, it has struggled with a small player base in a world designed for more activity, combined with some typical MMORPG frustrations, like limited storage space for an abundance of items. The grind for resources and gear upkeep can be daunting, but building your first house is an immersive experience, although time-consuming.

PvP and PvE Dynamics

A major change is the new PvP system. Players can now choose between peaceful and aggressive modes. Aggressive players can engage in PvP and have higher chances of earning divine rewards, while peaceful players are protected but may need to flag as aggressive in specific areas for certain content. This dual-mode system aims to reduce griefing, but the requirement for PvE players to engage in PvP for some content could still pose challenges. Forced PvP often pushes large amounts of players away.

Concerns and Final Thoughts

Despite the improvements, there are concerns about the lack of engaging PvE content. While the new updates are promising, PvP remains a niche appeal, and the game needs to ensure it keeps PvE players interested without forcing them into unwanted PvP scenarios. The grind and inventory management issues could also deter casual players.

Fractured Online’s journey to full release is commendable, especially given the odds it faced. While there are still areas needing improvement, the dedication of Dynamight Studios is something to celebrate. I’ll be diving into the new server to see how these changes play out.
