ESO Gold Road 1st Look

Welcome to The Tank Club, where we are going to dive deep into the tanking side of the upcoming Elder Scrolls Online chapter, Gold Road. Fresh from the ESO 10 event in Amsterdam, I’m here to share my first-hand experiences and discussions with the game’s developers.

Introducing Gold Road and New Tank Gear

Gold Road promises exciting additions for tank players. A standout feature is the new trial gear set for tanks. The heavy armor set from the new trial Lucent Citadel boosts your group’s critical and is easy to maintain. Also coming is a crafted tank set designed to reduce damage—ideal for newcomers without dungeon or trial gear. Furthermore, a Mythic item catches the eye, reducing incoming damage by 99% but with a significant cooldown, potentially useful in high-stakes scenarios.

Deep Dive into Scribing

Scribing, a precursor to spellcrafting, is a game-changer. Unlike full spellcrafting, scribing offers spell customization with restrictions, adding a layer of strategy. The system allows for over 4,000 spell combinations, making it a versatile tool, especially from a tank’s perspective.

To unlock scribing, players must complete a quest, approximately six hours long if you engage fully with the dialogue. This quest is designed to be done once, with subsequent playthroughs on other characters requiring significantly less time.

My Experience with the Scribing System

Having been invited to closed playtests, I’ve accumulated about 20 hours exploring scribing. The system is user-friendly despite its depth. Players start by acquiring a base spell (“grimoire” in-game) and then enhance it with scripts that modify its effects.

From a tank’s perspective, the options are impressive. I crafted spells that enhance class weaknesses, like providing a magicka-based pull, a “vacuum” AoE pull and a Magicka AoE immobilise crowd control for classes that typically lack it. Such flexibility could revolutionize tank play in diverse game settings.

Future Prospects and Feedback

The scribing system appears robust and scalable, with potential for future expansions. Initial feedback from high-end damage dealing players suggests that while it may not replace certain top-tier skills, it offers substantial benefits for tanks and players interested in variety and customization while also opening opportunities for other classes to become more efficient Tanks.

Final Thoughts

As the Public Test Server (PTS) launch approaches, I’m optimistic about the impact of these new features. Scribing seems well-designed, informed by passionate development, and poised to enrich the ESO tanking experience significantly.

Stay tuned for updates as we approach the PTS, and feel free to drop any questions or comments on The Tank Club Discord.
